v0

Generate UI with prompts, from the makers of Next.js.

Published

What it does

Why it matters

v0 made generative UI mainstream: describe an interface, get working React code using real component libraries — not mockups, not images, but code you can ship. It collapsed the design-to-code handoff for the large class of interfaces that are genuinely standard, and it keeps getting better at the custom ones.

Engineering notes

  • Real components, not pictures. Output uses shadcn/ui and Tailwind — the code is idiomatic, editable, and production-adjacent, not a black box.
  • Iterative refinement. Chat to iterate on the generated UI; each version is a fork you can compare. The versioning model respects how design actually works.
  • Deploy in one click. Vercel integration means the distance from prompt to live URL is minutes.

Limitations

  • Best at standard patterns; genuinely novel interactions still need a human designer.
  • Generated code needs review before production — accessibility and edge cases aren't guaranteed.
  • Locks you toward the Vercel/React/Tailwind stack by design.
