Bolt
Prompt, run, edit, and deploy full-stack apps in the browser.
What it does
Why it matters
Bolt removed the last excuse between an idea and a running app: no local setup, no toolchain, no deployment config. The prompt generates the app, WebContainers run it in your browser tab, and you iterate in a real editor. For prototypes and MVPs, it compressed days into an afternoon.
Engineering notes
- WebContainers underneath. Real Node.js running in the browser via WebAssembly — not a simulation, an actual runtime. That's the technical moat.
- Full-stack, not just UI. Database, auth, and backend logic included — the generated apps are structurally complete, not mockups.
- Edit, don't just prompt. Drops you into a working StackBlitz editor when the prompt hits its limits — the handoff to human engineering is graceful.
Limitations
- Generated architectures favor speed over longevity — plan a refactor before scaling.
- Complex, stateful backends still need human design.
- Token-based pricing can surprise on large iterations.
