Windsurf
The agentic IDE built around human-AI flow state.
What it does
Why it matters
While others bolted chat onto editors, Windsurf asked what an editor looks like when the AI is a first-class participant. Cascade maintains a mental model of what you're building across files — the "flow" concept is genuinely different from autocomplete-plus-chat, and it resonated with developers tired of prompt wrangling.
Engineering notes
- Cascade's persistent context. The agent remembers decisions across a session, reducing the re-explaining tax that plagues chat-based tools.
- Generous free tier. One of the most capable free offerings in the space, which drove rapid grassroots adoption.
- Multi-file awareness. Built from the start for changes that span the codebase, not single-file completions.
Limitations
- Smaller extension ecosystem than the VS Code family.
- Company trajectory has been turbulent (acquisition attempts, leadership changes) — worth watching for long-term bets.
- Less terminal-native than Claude Code for CLI-first workflows.

An all-in-one JavaScript runtime, bundler, test runner, and package manager.
Bun collapsed the Node.js toolchain — runtime, transpiler, bundler, test runner, package manager — into a single Zig binary that's dramatically faster at nearly everything. Cohesion as a performance strategy.
Continue
The open-source AI code assistant for VS Code and JetBrains.
Continue brings AI assistance into the editors developers already use — autocomplete, chat, and agent actions — open source and model-agnostic. The community-driven alternative to closed assistants.
Cursor
The AI-first code editor, forked from VS Code.
Cursor took VS Code's familiar surface and rebuilt the AI integration underneath: tab completion that predicts your next edit, a composer for multi-file changes, and agent mode that runs terminal commands.
