Why it matters
Developers live in the terminal, yet terminal emulators were stagnating — slow rendering, inconsistent Unicode, configuration via archaeology. Ghostty treated the terminal as a product worthy of craft: fast, correct, and pleasant, from someone who clearly uses it all day.
Engineering notes
- Written in Zig, rendered on the GPU. Text rendering is one of the few places users can literally see frame drops; Ghostty budgets for it.
- Native, not least-common-denominator. macOS gets a real Cocoa app; Linux gets GTK — platform conventions respected instead of papered over.
- Config as a single file. Sensible defaults with one discoverable config file, documented exhaustively.
Limitations
- Young project — the long tail of terminal emulation quirks (obscure escape sequences, niche multiplexers) is still being discovered.
- Windows support is the newest platform and the roughest.
